Back in the time when Napoleon was invading Europe, the British warship HMS Surprise commanded by Lucky Jack Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) was among the South Atlantic waters when it came across the almighty French warship Acheron when outsized and out-powered HMS Surprise. The ships played hide and seek and none of the ships had the upper hand. Jack, famous for being overly "responsible", stopped at the coast to save the life of his friend and only doctor on his ship Dr. Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany) after an accident. The doctor had a chance to explore the nature of that area, but not long later he discovered the French warship when eventually the two war-vehicles had to face each other in a sea battle.

The pace of the film is a bit slow but will not get the audience bored. The production is very detailed. You can hear the squeaking sound of the wood on the ship whenever such sound could be expected. The set of the HMS Surprise is also very detailed. The sea scenery looks very beautiful and very real, thanks to the modern filmmaking technology which makes the visual effect of "Titanic" look like kids' stuff. Unsurprisingly, the film had got a number of nominations in Oscar. Of course, the excellent acting of both Crowe and Bettany is also worth mentioning (though Crowe does not get an nomination with this film).
