Hollywood star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) was hired to make a whisky commercial in Tokyo. He stayed in the same hotel as Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) whose husband, John (Giovanni Ribisi), married to for 2 years, was a photographer on an assignment there. Both had nothing to do at night and they met in the hotel's bar. Charlotte later took Bob to see some of her friends there. They spent some good time together, and supported each other emotionally. Finally, the weekend had come and Bob had to leave the city, and whatever between he and Charlotte behind...

The film is a very amusing one. It features the clash between the Japanese culture and the American culture. What is also talked about is marriage and relationships, which is discussed through the marriages of Charlotte and Bob. The story explores the evolution of a marriage down the road, from two loving souls to adding kids to the family to the distancing of the once-close partners.

The film on the whole is a light-hearted one, one that makes you smile and think about things at the same time. In many instances the film does give people a feeling that the film is made by a female director. In fact, it is, by Sophia Coppola. She is nominated for best directing in Oscar, and this shows how much artistic and entertaining the film is. I tend to agree with the members of the Academy.
