The film is about a revolution of robots in 2035 and its theme is explicitly exhibited by the characters in the last sequences. The robots' revolution is a metaphor of the repercussions of human beings' endless and uncontrollable exploitation of the existing resources (and thus the robots' insurrection is to stop human beings from their dangerous act for their own goodness). The story is educative: there must be sacrifices at the present to nurture a better future, a concept compatible to the notion of sustainable development.
Most of the aerial establishment shots of Chicago are enabled by CG. In this genre of science fiction, compositional motivation is dominant in establishing futuristic props and settings (save that costumes of the characters and some landmark buildings of Chicago remain essentially the same as those of the present era under realistic motivation). In particular, the director makes the costumes of the human beings remaining at the present style to deliver a contrast with the outlook of the robots.
The story is told in a restricted narrative. Linearity predominates but there are occasional flashbacks that give cues to the viewer as to what and why the major characters do. Temporal and spatial orientations are clearly narrated in the plots. Filmic elements are not outstanding; they are the common stuffs that are bound to appear in this genre. It is for these reasons that the film's thematic loading is more magnificent than its CG enabled aesthetic flicks.
