Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) quitted his job as a professor because he was accused of saying some foolish remark against two absent students. Later he became a friend of Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise), after an unsuccessful attempt to asked Nathan to write a book about Coleman's love story with Faunia Farley (Nicole Kidman) whom he met from the post office. However, Lester Farley (Ed Harris), Faunia's ex-husband, was constantly trying to get Coleman away from her. Through his conversation with Nathan, Coleman revealed his long kept secret that surprised every one.

The trailer of the film suggests that the film is about an ex-husband interfering the relationship of his ex-wife. However, the truth is that the film is about something much more meaningful. The ridicule of racism is the theme, and actually the Faunia-Coleman relationship plays a very minor role in the theme.

Despite the strong message from the story, the idea is not being hard-sold in the film. This makes the film quite an easy one to watch. The excellent acting of all the main actors (Hopkins, Kidman, Sinise, and Harris) also makes the film equally excellent.

I actually have a lot to say about this film, but I want more not to reveal the secret of Coleman which plays such a pivotal role in the development of the story. The revealing of his truth is the turning point of the film, and it is an element of the film that makes the film enlightening and entertaining.
