The film connotes 3 levels of stain: (1) the physical level of Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) 's race; (2) the behavioural level of Coleman's and Faunia Farley's (Nicole Kidman) lure for sex; and (3) the psychological level of Coleman's thought of slavery. The director uses narrative retardation to delay revelation of plot development at the point of the traffic accident (at the beginning of the film). The narrative is basically unrestricted (albeit that the accident is contemplated) but temporally manipulated under flash backs and discontinuous editing that bring the viewer into different time dimensions. Narrative-wise, Faunia Farley is both instrumental in invoking Coleman's behavioural stain and a medium by which he releases his psychological stain. The synergy between watching this film and "The Cold Mountain" is the immediate evaluation of Kidman's performance (polarized characterisation) in the 2 films in her attempt to be a method actress.
