Criminal Psychologist Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) worked in the Woodward Penitentiary for Women, headed by her husband (Charles S. Dutton). Dr. Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.), Miranda's colleague, had a crush on her. One day, while her husband had gone way for some business, Miranda was driving home on a detour, where she hit a ghost-like creature at the end of a bridge. When she woke up, she found herself locked up in her own ward, for she was considered insane and had killed her husband. Her former patient Chloe (Penelope Cruz), who had challenged Miranda's sense of sane, suddenly had her behavior making sense to Miranda. Unable to believe that she had killed her husband, she decided to escaped from the penitentiary and investigate the crime herself.
The film's plot does not sound too original, but the film itself was able to lead the audience to believe something that is not true. Who is the villain? Many members of the audience would point to the wrong person until the end of the film. The tone of the film is set to be a bit dark and is consistent throughout the length of the film, which creates the right chemistry for the audience to experience the story with the protagonist. The cast performed very well, especially, of course, the Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry.
The story explored the concept of sanity, which challenges our belief in what is true or not. This is where I see no originality, and it fails to make the point by using paranormal arguments, in any case. But apart from that, the film is quite entertaining.
