Garfield is heavily humanized with sentiment, emotion, intelligence, lust, temper and most significantly, envy. The last one is the motif in the movie. The narrative is chronological, linear and unrestricted. The film externalizes Garfield's and other animals' intrinsic thoughts by making them speak human language. However, tactfully enough, the director does not make Ode speak in order to erect a unilateral relation between Garfield and Ode for the sake of adding narrative to the 2 characters by using a contrast: Garfield is flippant and aggressive; Ode is reticent and meek.
The animation of Garfield and the portrayal of his body details (colour, fur) are well done that the animated figure closely imitates human gestures in the dancing sequence while retaining the animal walking profile in the rest of the film. To reinforce Garfield's humanity and arouse the interaction of the spectator, the director also adopts a rhetorical mode in the staging of Garfield to occasionally place the spectator in a second person position by making Garfield talk directly to (and sometimes look at) the spectator. Overall, the cutie visuals and vocals suffice to titillate the kids whereas the emotional substances and thematic strength are less powerful than "Babe".
