It is a movie about politics, movies and abnormal love (and sex) among 3 youngsters, 2 of whom are sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and brother, Theo (Louis Garrel). The narrative is linear and chronological. Yet out of the 3 characters, the plots centre around Matthew (Michael Pitt) and Director Bertolucci highlights this by the use of Matthew's voice-over as an intrinsic expression at the beginning and the end of the story. Matthew is depicted as at least with some rationality that restrains himself from being lost in the psychologically abnormal world of the twins.
Bertolucci produces lots of scenes of male and female frontal nudity, love-making and aberrant sexual behaviours to reinforce the psychological status of the protagonists. He further uses mirrors to reflect images of the protagonists, which is an expression commonly found in Wong Kar-wai's films. Aesthetics in cinematography and editing is rich. In the first crossing path between Matthew and Isabelle, there are several shots that the camera crosses the axis of action (an extraordinary technique that is seldom used in commercial movies). There are also lots of graphic matches in editing (where scenes without spatial or temporal relations are joined together making the illusion that the action of the subjects is seemingly related) particularly between the footage of some old films and the action of the 3 protagonists. In a nutshell, it is an artistic film with a strong theme.
