It is a rare American movie that does not carry Americanism. Environmental determinism (subordination of the mankind to the nature) underlines the theme. The inability of the human being in front of the nature is revealed. The story is told under a linear narrative with the exposition (detection of abnormal weather) followed by the development (deterioration of weather conditions), the climax (freezing of objects in New York) and the equilibrium that brings the ending (rescue of the victims in the New York Library). Unlike "The Independence Day", neither the disequilibrium nor the equilibrium is made by live-beings. They are brought by the nature.
The film contains many semiotic signifiers on the awareness of the vulnerability of the US's supremacy: the freezing of the US flag, the death of the US president (not omnipotent under adverse weather), the portrayal of the US refugee camp and the US vice-president's speech in acknowledging the assistance from the third world countries. The film is a powerful rhetoric that carries a connoted message about the role of the US in the political platform and the mankind as a whole in the world.
