Horty (Olivier Martinez) won a competition in the foundry he worked in. The prize was to go to Southampton to watch the Titanic's maiden voyage. During his stay in England, Marie (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon), a chamber maid of the Titanic, asked Horty to accommodate her in his room. Marie was photographed and Horty asked the photographer to give him her picture. When he went back to his home town, he started to tell the story of himself and Marie, after being asked to in the bar. When he knew Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean, his story became more exciting, and attracted a large crowd. No long after, he was on the road telling his story with his wife Zoe (Romane Bohringer), adding more and more sensational details. The story then ended with a twist.
The story, although involving the tragedy of the Titanic, is quite lighthearted. Actually, the Titanic only appeared in one shot in the film, and the sinking of the cruiser was not filmed at all. The story talks about the curiosity of the people about what happened to Horty during his trip. This kind of mirror film watchers' mentality: We know films are just fabricated stories but we are still crazy about them. The film does not tell the audience what exactly happened the night Horty stayed in the Southampton Hotel. The writers left this to the interpretation of the audience, who has to decide which part of Horty's story is the truth and which part are just fabrications. This is the center of gravity of the film, and it is quite successful in this respect.
