The film is a light-hearted comedy and a sequel of the predecessor. The director works on vertical intertextuality in having the film's opening resembling Part I by the use of a family party. The major casts remain unchanged. Yet Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) this time diminishes to a supporting role. The use of BJ (Renee Zellweger)'s voice over throughout the film serves 2 purposes: (1) to elaborate on the diegesis in a cost-effective way (i.e., without using lots of scenes/sequences) and (2) to externalize the intrinsic psychology of BJ herself. The second purpose is particularly crucial to the narrative as it adopts an "inside-out" orientation of BJ in the portraying the relationships between BJ and her lawyer boyfriend, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).
The tranquil and invert character of Mark (an almost perfect man) are sharply contrasted with the overt and flippant personality of BJ. The comedic elements are strengthened by having BJ a bit bigger in size than she is Part I. The main theme of hopefulness, insistence and accommodation of hardships and difficulties is the treasure of the film. The philosophy of BJ closely resembles what Chinese call "The Spirit of Ah-Q". It is this psychology that makes the comedy light-hearted, appeasing and laughter generating. Human life will be more comfortable and interpersonal relations far more congenial if everyone were BJ.
