The film is a police-chasing-criminal story with an ornament of the role of the mass media in propaganda. It rightly carries a realistic theme that information dissemination (be it through the mass media or otherwise) is highly selective and the gate-keeping and editing process of sound-bite journalism effectively and manipulatively serves to downplay the bad and intensify the good.

The movie has a good beginning in terms of both story and visual, especially the long take comprising various camera movements (crane, tracking, turnaround) that constitute changes of extreme long shots of the locale and medium shots of the protagonists. The middle is full of tension when the gang (actually 2 gangs) has a head-on confrontation with the police in a residential building. The repeated use of slit-staging (in which the police and the gang members move in the narrow corridors inside the building) in the middle sequences serves to add another dimension of tension in the narrative.

The whole film consists of distinct camera movements, with many turnaround shots in handheld camera (steadycam). The use of relatively slow paced music matches with the steady camera movements. Repeated use of split screen enhances the emotional and visual tension of the viewer. Yet the way the gang leader escapes from the building and the ending of the film do not bring any surprise to the viewer after the culmination of tension in the earlier part of the plot.

Incidentally, the locale of the gunfire in the building is Ferry Point, the place where a top wanted criminal in Hong Kong was caught last year. Perhaps the reality sparks off the idea in the mind of Director To.
