Although this Part II is directed by a different director, Paul Greengrass, it resembles closely Part I (The Bourne Identity) in narrative structure, cinematography and pace. This is probably because of 2 facts: (1) the inherent fast flow of the original novel (although this widescreen product substantially alters the novel's version) and (2) the executive producer, Doug Liman, is the director of Part I.
The story is told under a restricted but linear narrative around the same motifs of amnesia and lost identify (already adopted in Part I) of the key character Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). Soon after the expository sequence of Bourne's whereabouts and the disequilibrium arising from the death of his wife Marie (Franka Potente), the story develops into 2 parallel plots under a moderate pace of cross cutting: (1) Bourne's chasing of the back-seat boss and the assassin and (2) agent Pamela Landy's (Joan Allen) chasing of Bourne. Occasional flashbacks with twisted images depicting Bourne's residual memories are used to shift in chronology to repeatedly highlight the story causality. Nevertheless, the 2 key characters of the respective plots, Bourne and agent Landy, do not meet face to face in the story.
This quick-paced film proceeds under fast cutting. The use of mobile camera to create slightly toppling image gives rise to tension and assists to express the psychological state of Bourne. The occasional sneaking shots in which the characters are shown behind blurred foreground objects under shallow focus and dim lighting further render an atmosphere of conspiracy in the plots. To gratify the spectator and as an indispensable element of this genre, there are exciting car chasing and body to body fighting sequences of fairly long duration.
Despite fast cutting and the presence of multiple locales shown in cross editing in the film, it is still easy for the viewer to get hold of the temporal and spatial dimensions of the sequences as Greengrass uses non-diegetic music to orientate the viewer about spatial plane of the characters.
In this genre of undefeated spies, the spectator knows that the main protagonists will not die and will eventually attain their goals. It is for this reason that the final fate of Bourne is not the trick. Rather director Greengrass creates suspense along the lines of how Bourne survives from the chasing of Landy and how he takes a revenge on the bad guys. However, the entire story fits well into the expectations of the viewer: there is no surprise in the diegesis. Yet the running-water like pacing and the catch-and-run formulae of this genre are able to keep the eyes of the spectator open throughout the screen time of 110 minutes. In a nutshell, it is a typical spy movie of exciting action visuals but lacking in surprise and only marginal in creating suspense.
