Angel (Gael Garcia Bernal), a transvestite formerly called Ignacio, visited his long lost friend/lover Enrique (Fele Martinez), who was a director of 3 successful films, and brought him a script he wrote about himself and Enrique loosely based on the real life stories of the two. Enrique was fascinated by the script and decided to make a film out of it, but Angel insisted he be the protagonist Zahara. Enrique did not want Angel to be Zahara, though. Enrique later tried to visit Angel, and found that Angel was actually not what Angel claimed to be. So Enrique let Angel be Zahara so that he could find out the truth. Then Father Manolo (Daniel Gimenez Cacho), who was a real life person and also a role in Angel's script, appeared during the filming. The truth was then revealed.

Although the film involves homosexuality, homosexuality does not contribute much to the development of the story. Also, it does not make me feel sick. Luckily, it is a gay film not for promoting acceptance of gayness, or else the feeling could be very different. The story of the film is in fact a very interesting one. It is actually not one story, but three stories intertwined together: Manolo's abusing of Ignacio in school, the finding of the truth by Enrique, and the Zahara/Enrique encounter in the script. The three are carefully sewn together to make this good film. The surprising ending is almost comparable to the surprise you can find in "Six Sense" or "The Others".

I am sure if you like the director (Pedro Almodovar)'s former films of "All about My Mother" and "Talk to Her", you are going to love this film. I recommend it.
