21 grams is the weight of a human soul (if you believe it). And this film is about the value of life.
Born-again ex-con Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Toro) killed a Mr. Peck and his two daughters in a traffic accident. Because of Peck's death, Paul Rivers (Sean Penn), a mathematician, can receive a heart transplant. Paul wanted to know who gave him the new heart and he found out that it was from Peck. With gratitude, he found Cristina, Peck's wife, and tried to console her. Not long after, they were in a relationship. They later found out that one of Cristina's daughters did not have to die in the accident, and so she wanted to kill Jack with the help of Paul…
This film reminds me of my 2001-favorite "Memento". Unlike "Memento" where the story was told in a reverse order, "21 Grams" is completely out of sequence. I thought I was missing something when I watch the first 10 minutes of the film. I was also wondering if it was the reels that were out of sequence instead of the scenes. But later, everything seems to fall into places. That being said, it is, like "Memento", that needs your brain present in the theater. Actually, it is not hard to re-order the scenes in your mind after you watch the whole film.
The film is entertaining, and the way that the story sequence (or lack of sequence) is presented is remarkable. It is a film not to be missed.
