The long awaited "2046" is finally released. This film has its production started years ago and then director Wong Kar-Wai turned to film the "prequel" of the film "In the Mood for Love". Having said that, it would be wise for the viewers to have watched "In the Mood for Love" before watching the film as there are a lot of references of the film in "2046". By the way, there are significant links between "2046" and "Days of Being Wild", too.

In this film, Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Chiu-Wai Leung) was no longer the shy abandoned married man. He had become somewhat like a playboy, although quite a passive one. The film talks about his affairs with a number of girls, including Su Li Zhen (Gong Li) of Cambodia, Su Li Zhen (Maggie Cheung) of Hong Kong (Mrs. Chan), and Lulu (Carina Lau), but most of the screen time was devoted to describe the relationship between he and Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi). Seemingly, after his divorce with his ex-wife and the failed relationship with Mrs. Chan, he had trouble in committing to a relationship. All he could look for in a relationship is romance, memory, and physical relationship.

Apart from this, there is a fair share of time devoted to talk about Chow's fantasy as written in his novels, especially in his "2047". In the story, everything seems to be a pure fantasy, but is always inspired by Chow's real life experience, and reflects his wishes in real life.

The story progresses in a non-linear fashion. As a matter of fact, the story jumps from one point in time to another quite freely. It could make some people difficult to follow. Also, one may feel that somehow this story of "2046" has been modified a thousand times. It is not that there are contradictions, but this just shows. It is not abnormal if it took so many years to make this film. Anyway, the film is quite an entertaining one and I believe it is worth our time to watch it.
