Yes, this is a rat film. Contrary to my expectation, it is not about the kingdom of rats challenging the superiority of human, but is about the main characters Willard and his relationships with two of the many rats in his rat-infested house.

"Willard" is the remake of same-titled film dated back to 1971. The story is about a social misfit, Willard Stiles (Crispin Glover) who lived with his mother. He had no friends, or I should say no human friends. He started to befriend with a white mouse, whom he named Socrates. Later, he developed a love-hate relationship with a big rat, Ben, who was the leader of the rest of the rats. Willard was a nobody at work, where the company he worked for was founded by his late father and his boss Frank Martin (R. Lee Ermey). The employer-employee relationship between the two soon turned sour as Willard was not capable enough. So, Willard turned to his "friends" to take revenge against Frank.

The plot is not about a lot of things, but I did not feel bored at all when I watched the film. Glover's performance must have been a reason. He brought the pitiable and creepy characters of Willard to life. Another reason must have been the way of director Glen Morgan who made every scene an interesting one. And, the rats looked very real, despite the rats in the close-to-final scene do look computer-animated.

I have not seen the 1971 "Willard". I think it must be interesting to compare the two, and to understand how the rat scenes in the 1971 film were made.
