Astrid's (Alison Lohman) mother Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) killed her boyfriend with the poison of oleander because he was dating somebody else at the same time. She was subsequently sentenced for life. Astrid was sent to a foster home of Starr (Robin Wright Penn), where started out to have a pleasant religious life, until Starr became too jealous that Astrid was bonding with Starr's husband. She was then sent to stay with kids of similar backgrounds. Later she was fostered by Claire (Renee Zellweger), who loved Astrid very much. At any point in time, Ingrid was possessive, and tried to limit the foster parents' influence on Astrid, thinking that her way of life was the best for Astrid. Astrid eventually chose to live an alternative life. Late, Ingrid wanted to appeal, and asked Astrid to give false testimony. Astrid unwillingly agreed, under the condition that Ingrid will leave her alone forever…

Oleander is a poisonous plant, though beautiful. That's what Ingrid used to kill her boyfriend. At the same time, Ingrid's love towards Astrid, though beautiful, was poisonous, too. Because of her possessive behavior, Astrid did not really have her own life. This is basically what the whole story is about. I cannot agree more. A lot of mothers try to "protect" their children from any "harm" that their children can suffer, but do not consider what their children want and what their children need, and in the end the real harm comes from the mothers' "protection" and "love" (The same holds true for fathers). Shouldn't parents put some thoughts on this?

Though the cast was great, I do not see any breakthrough by the 3 best actresses: Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Penn Wright, and Renee Zellweger. They acted pretty much at the same level and the same way in many of their other films. On the other hand, Alison Lohman who played Astrid outshone these well-known actresses. Though at the age of 23, she played the teenager girl just right.
