Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling), a detective storywriter, had run out of inspiration in writing her next book. Her publisher John Bosload (Charles Dance) offered his house in France for her to stay and write. Sarah stayed there for a while, and found that John's daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) was to stay there. Julie was a fool-around girl. She brought different guys at different nights to the house. They could not get along, until Sarah decided that she was to write her new book about Julie. Julie found out her motive, and decided to help Sarah a bit by doing something outrageous. In the end, the story was not what it seemed to be.
The plot bears a surprising ending, which basically surprises everybody but makes a lot of sense as to why things happened. The pace of the film is kind of slow, and there was a number of unnecessary footage. One can argue that it is necessary to trick the audience, but this style is actually quite director/screenwriter Ozon's style.
The film is a category film. In my opinion, the nudity and adult content in the film is not necessary. Those do not make it a bad film, but limit the audience to adults. I believe the plot itself is good enough to sell.
