This is not an insect film, to start with, although web was a small part of the film.

Spider (Ralph Fiennes) was an insane person. He was transferred to live in a halfway house. During his stay, he went back to his old home and "experienced" what he thought had happened, namely, his father (Gabriel Byrne) killing her mother (Miranda Richardson) and took home a whore (also Miranda Richardson) from a bar to live with him (Bradley Hall as boy Spider).

Without knowing what this film was about before watching the film, I was a bit confused when I saw the old and young Spiders in the same scene and wonder why boy Spider was following old Spider's lines. When I read the materials later, every pieces of the puzzle just fell into place. But, well, now you know.

The story is not only about what happened, but also how Spider reacted to what he thought had happened as a result of his paranoia. Fiennes had made Spider such an interesting and believable character.

This film is one of the few mainstream films in HKIFF, which is both artistic and entertaining. I believe most people will enjoy this film.
