Sonny (James Franco), a gigolo before he joined the military, just finished his career as a soldier, went back home in New Orleans to visit his mother Jewel (Brenda Blethyn) before heading to Texas City to land on a job in a bookstore. He was trying to change his life. Jewel, a pimp, had a new girl Carol (Mena Suvari) working for her. Jewel wanted Sonny and Carol to partner to serve her clients, hoping that her mother-son-partnering business would take off. Henry (Harry Dean Stanton), Jewel's boyfriend/close friend, was pretty supportive about Sonny's move. Sonny's trip to Texas City turned out to be a disaster, and he went back to New Orleans to partner with Carol. Carol always wanted to lead a normal life, and she worked hard for it. Sonny was discouraged and gave up that thought. Both of them were searching for their meanings of life.

The story explores the wishes of sex workers. The plot has a bunch of sub-stories which show the audience something about the lives of these people, such as how they provide their services, what they would encounter in their business, and how they would react to what they experience. To a lot of people, these sex-workers are not part of their lives socially. It is quite interesting to know what their lives are like.

Although the film is a Category III film and nudity is involved, the amount of offensive scenes is kept to a minimum. So, this is not much a porn film. Rather, what it talks about is quite meaningful.

Nicolas Cage is the director of the film. He also had a small part in it. You may be delighted to see how interesting he looks in the film.
