Rafael (Ricardo Darin) was the owner of a successful restaurant in Buenos Aires. His father Nino (Hector Alterio) wanted to host a wedding ceremony in a church to wed his wife Norma (Norma Aleandro), who was suffering from Alzheimer disease, again as they did not have a chance to do that 44 years ago. Rafael wanted Nino to have Nino's dream trip to go back to his birthplace in Italy, but Nino would rather had the wedding. One day, Rafael had a heart attack which he survived. During his stay in the hospital, he rethought a lot about his life, his relationship with his daughter, his girlfriend, his ex-wife, and the second wedding of his parents, and he decided to change some aspects of his life from then on.
This film won a lot of prizes in Argentina 2 years ago and was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 74th Oscar. The achievement is not a fluke. The script is very touching. The message of the story is kind of subtle, even though everybody would be able to understand what the film is really about. Rafael's life is a lot like a typical Hong Kong guy: putting a tremendous amount of time at work and swamped by many other responsibilities outside work, feeling tired of everything all along. Also, he decided what was good for his father while his father had changed his life goal. Many people do not have the luxury to experience the inflexion point as Rafael when one can put down everything that one is doing and relook at life from a different perspective. To some people, a heart attack would be the event to stop what they are doing, or even their existence in this world.
If you know both written Chinese and English, I suggest you read the English subtitles. The Chinese subtitles, I think, was a translation from the English subtitles and the translated did not watch the film to figure out what was really being talked about. In any case, the Chinese subtitles would confuse you. That being said, I do not like the work of the Chinese subtitles. We need better translators in this industry.
But all in all, Son of the Bride is a very good film. Five stars I give to this film!
