The story happens to a French upper class family. On the surface, the family was normal. However, it was not what it looked like. Everything started with the father's (Francois Marthouret) bringing a rat home. That night, the son Nicolas (Adrien de Van) suddenly had an idea that he was homosexual. Later, the daughter Sophie (Marina de Van) attempted suicide, but she only made herself paralyzed waist below. Because of her self-pity, her boyfriend David (Stephane Rideau) could not make her happy. Their maid from Spain Maria (Lucia Sanchez) was going to marry Abdu (Jules-Emmanuel Eyoum Deido) who was homosexual. The mother (Evelyne Dandry), trying to make Nicolas heterosexual, slept with him. Because of this situation, the mother had to see a shrink (Jean Douchet). She decided to do a group therapy which the father, thinking that he could accept everything happening, did not join. The father suddenly became the odd man out…
Although the title is "Sitcom", it is not really a situation comedy. In fact, I think the ending is indeed a tregedy. A warning sign here: this film is French. Like other French films, this one is no Hong Kong film and no Hollywood film, meaning you cannot enjoy it to the fullest if you do not put some thoughts while watching it (some people left the theater when I was watching it). Well, I tried, but still I do not think I get every piece of the puzzle. The family members were basically all freaks, maybe except the father who was less a freak but accepted all the freaky things happening around him. He had thought about eliminating the chaos around him, but he chose to accept the world as is. In the end, his openmindedness was not appreciated at all, and the rest of the freaky family took control. Probably the director/screenwriter Ozon wanted to express his view about the freakiness of the world, and through the father's character he shows his own payoff as a result. The rat should symbolize something, but I just cannot figure it out. Maybe you can tell me?
If you do not think this film is imprtant at all, may be you will change your mind if you know the director Ozon was also director the famous current film "8 Femmes" and the less famous "Under the Sand" which was shown in Hong Kong just a few months ago. "Sitcom" was originally released in 1998, meaning it was made earlier than the abovementioned 2 films. Perhaps you can notice how Ozon's technique had evolved over the years if you watch this film.
One thing, about my experience of watching this film. An inconsiderate man talked on the phone loudly, asking the person on the phone to go to watch the film with him. Then a woman shouted loudly to stop him from talking on the phone. Later, the man talked on the phone again and the woman screamed again. Nobody working at the theater stopped them. These things don't happen every day, right? Although I don't want to experience this kind of thing, it was interesting in that these people's behaviors mirror the behaviors of the freaky characters in the film!
