Walter's (Haley Joel Osment) mother Mae (Kyra Sedgwick) took him to live with his two wealthy and eccentric great-uncles Garth (Michael Caine) and Hub (Robert Duvall), hoping that the great-uncles would love him and in the end she would be benefited financially. Garth and Hub's source of wealth was a mystery, and people suspected that they were involved in some serious crime. Other relatives were eyeing on their wealth, too, and were hoping to inherit some money from these old guys when they die. During his stay with the great-uncles, he learned about their past, which sound adventurous and, well, too adventurous. Walter did not know if he should believe in the stories. Afterwards, his mother came back with a boyfriend and wanted to take some money from the great-uncles, and Walter had to make a decision as to whether he should stay with the weird old men or help his mother to steal the men's money...

The story of the film is a very refreshing, lighthearted one. Although quite rudderless at the beginning, the story does go somewhere as it progresses. The "secondhand lion" which is mentioned in the title of the film plays a seemingly minor role in the whole story, but it is so important in sending the message that sometimes what appears to be not useful can become very important. In fact, Walter seems to be useless to the great-uncles, and vice-versa, it turned out that they all depended on each other. One thing that the story brings out is whether we should believe the bravery and courage of the great people to be true. The idea is quite enlightening.

Haley Joel Osment is now a teenager. From "Forrest Gump" (1994) to "Secondhand Lions" (2003), he has grown quite a bit. Not as cute as before, but he has grown into much finer actor now. Coupled with the fine acting of Caine and Duvall, the film is quite a good one to watch.
