The costume of Giant Muscle (Andy Lau) and the Chinese title of the film build upon the success of Andy's costume in his film "Love on a Diet" in 2001. The story and plot, however, have minimal links to the masculinity of Big Muscle, which is merely a marketing appeal for the film. The film centres around the Buddhist theme of cause-and-effect in one's different cycles of life in eternality and is expressed alongside 2 major sequences of murderers chasing under a highly restricted narrative that encompasses a strong hermeneutic code. It witnesses the intensive use of stunt actions under blue screens and computer graphics. The directors also substantially manage cinematographic and sound elements such as juxtaposed images, twisted images, low angle shots of Giant Muscle (intensifying his physical powerfulness), freeze frame with fading colour, and asynchronized vocal of Giant Muscle (in the sequence of his search for the female police constable).
The directors exploit spatial & temporal relations to a full extent and establish a narrative complexity entailing the internal meditation of Giant Muscle and the future temporal dimension visualized under cross-editing: alternating between the present and the past (flashbacks arising out of Giant Muscle's internal meditation of other people's previous cycle of life) as well as between the present and the future (Giant Muscle's internal view of the future in his thoughts). Spectacular in narrative structure, visual images, the repeated appeal of costume and the theme, the film is worth watching, for those who do not have excessive expectation on it.
