Publicist Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell), married to Kelly (Radha Mitchell), called his "girlfriend" Pam (Katie Holmes), who was a naive actress wannabe, every day in the same phone booth. "The caller" (Kiefer Sutherland) was a psycho who thought he had to punish Stu for all his wrongdoings, including adultery and lying. One day, after Stu made a call to Pam in the phone booth, the Caller called Stu at the phone booth. Somehow, Stu decided to pick up the phone. The Caller started to threaten to kill him with a rifle. Stu then had to follow everything the Caller demanded…

Before I watched the film, I wondered how long a film of this plot could last. In fact, 90% of the film was shot within the block where the phone booth was situated. Yes, the film lasts only 81 minutes. That's the shortest Hollywood non-animation I have ever watched. That being said, it is cheap to make. However, the quality of the film does not necessarily have a direct relationship with the film budget, and this film is absolutely a good use of money.

The film is much more than what happened in the phone booth. The first thing that we may want to think about is why Stu picked up the phone. Actually, this parallels why Stu took Pam as his lover when he had a wife whom he loved very much. It does not mean that you have to pick up a payphone when it rings. With the same token, when Pam came to Stu's life, he did not have to take her. Although the Caller is basically a psycho, it was Stu himself who got himself into the trouble. The Caller treasured what an ordinary person would treasure: respect, honesty, and loyalty. Stu had none of them, unfortunately, and that was the reason why he was picked.

The film's release date in US was postponed because right before the original release date the D.C. psycho sniper was in the middle of killing more than 10 innocent people. I admire the distributor's decision not to take advantage of the news. In fact, the film deserves a space of its own.
