Nick (Jason Patric), a narc who was suspended, was commissioned to investigate the death of a fellow narc Elvin (Dan Leis) because of his relationship with the gangsters. Elvin's former head Henry Oak (Ray Liotta) was also in the investigation. All clues suggested that Elvin's former fellow gangsters were the murderers, but it turned out to be something completely different.

The chemistry is quite intense from the very beginning. However, the pace slows down in the middle where the plot was going nowhere. The audience kind of lost track of what was really going on. The film picks up the pace at the end, where the truth is revealed, and that fortunately that part is quite entertaining.

Although produced by Hollywood pretty boy Tom Cruise, the style is quite "independent". For those who have watched too many Hollywood films, watching the film is quite a refreshing experience.
