Eddie Yang (Jackie Chan) was sent to Dublin, Ireland to investigate with Interpol's Arthur Watson (Lee Evans) and his lover Nicole James (Claire Forlani) about Snakehead's (Julian Sands) trafficking Jai (Alexander Bao), a young monk, from Hong Kong to Ireland. When Jai arrived at Ireland, both Jai and Eddie were trapped in the same container. To save Jai, Eddie sacrificed himself, but Jai used the Medallion to revive Eddie, making him an immortal man. Snakehead got Jai finally, and had Jai make him immortal. The fight between Eddie and Snakehead became inevitable…
The story is basically okay, but that's all. It lacks originality and creativity. The plot seems to be too simple for screenwriter Alfred Cheung. Cheung had been known to write excellent script, but perhaps the production team focuses more on actions and CGI? Well, when you watch a Jackie Chan's film, action is probably what you are looking for. Although a few of his actions in this film are quite entertaining, the actions as a whole make no surprises. Maybe Chan's acrobatic ability is much younger than his biological age, his action is certainly getting old (pun intended here). Action-wise, this is not a very pleasing film.
Apart from Chan himself, the cast is not quite a well-known one, even though main actors including Claire Forlani and Lee Evans, who have attractive resumes, are almost unheard of by the Hong Kong audience. And apart from these guys, the acting is mediocre. With such a big budget of HK$300 million, many things could have been done better. I wonder how this sum of money can be spent based on what I have seen in the film.
I will never question Jackie Chan's sincerity in making a good film. Clearly, the team is not working well. Many of the members of the crew are Hongkongers. Is the project too much for them? Is it the system? They surely need some more experience to make a good Hollywood style film.
