Before I talk about the film, I want to talk about my bizarre experience in watching the press screening of the film a few days ago. During the last few years, I have been to more than 360 screenings. None of them requires the audience to check in their mobile phone, have their bags searched, and go through metal detectors. Not even for “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”. This one does. It took about half an hour to have the whole audience enter the theatre, and another 15 minutes for them to leave the place. I think the film owner is too protective.
Anyway, back to the film. This film is the final episode of the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Starting from where the previous episode ends, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin), navigated by Gollum (Andy Serkis), were heading to Mount Doom the get the One Ring destroyed. Meanwhile, Mordor, lead by Sauron, was planning the final battle against the Middle Earth. Gondor’s army was grossly outnumbered, and luckily Gandalf was able to predict the plans of Mordor and sought help for Gondor from Rohan and the Dead Army. The battle was fierce, and Frodo was facing the trap installed by the Gollum (or Smeagol)…
The theme of this episode is not new to the trilogy: many humans’ blind love for power. The film started with a brief introduction of the character Gollum/Smeagol, which answers the question why the creature behaved the way it did. Then, it continues with for journey of Frodo and the battle of the Middle Earth for another 3 hours. As in the first two episodes, visual effects were close to perfect, and the progress of the story was again very intense. The film was so entertaining that it does not feel like to last that long, perhaps until the last 5 to 10 minutes when everything had settled down and became a bit boring in the end. Well, when you have spent more than 9 hours watching the while story, 5 to 10 minutes is not much to waste.
The “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy sets the new standard for the film industry. Basically, it makes a lot of huge budget films look like kids’ projects. Certainly, the production of the trilogy had got an enormous budget, but many aspects of the goodness of the film are not about money, but how much effort one wants to put into the film.
