M (Richard Roxburgh) was recruiting some extraordinary people to form the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to protect England from the invasion of other European countries. He put together a team of Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery) of King Solomon's Mines (By H.Rider Haggard), Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah) of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (By Jules Verne), Mina Harker (Peta Wilson) of Dracula (By Bram Stoker), Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran) of The Invisible Man (By H.G. Wells), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend) of A Picture Of Dorian Gray (By Oscar Wilde), Tom Sawyer (Shane West) of The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (By Mark Twain), Dr. Henry Jekyll (a.k.a. Mr. Edward Hyde) of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (By Robert Louis Stevenson). The group sailed to Venice to try to stop attack on the peace convention by the Germans, and the mission turned out to be a set up...

The plot is quite an interesting one, where well-known characters from classic literature were pulled together in an adventure. Also, tomorrow's technology is merged with the past of 1899: Captain Nemo was the head of a blade-shape submarine; the group has a car to use... The concept is unquestionably creative. The plot has a little bit of twist, after which the remaining of the story is quite predictable, though. On the whole it is entertaining, but deeper under the skin it is just mostly empty.

The story was set to happen in 1899, when submarines and motor vehicles were not even invented. I can live with that. However, part of the dialog is culturally not correct. For example, a line for Tom Sawyer was "Do you care for a spin?", which is so slang-ish that it does not fit into the setting.

In sum, the setting of the film is interesting, and the film is entertaining and visually fulfilling, while the story is a bit weak.
