In 1989, Alex (Daniel Bruehl) participated in demonstration against communism in East Germany. His mother Christiane (Kathrin Sass), being a good citizen of the country, suffered massive heart attack when she saw Alex arrested for that. She went into a coma. During her coma, East Germany merged with West Germany to form the new Germany. A lot of things changed. When she was awake, the doctor suggested Alex and his sister Ariane (Maria Simon) not to give her any surprises. Because Christiane contributed a lot to the whole society, Alex was afraid that the merger would give her another heart attack. So, he decided to bring his mother back home, and create an East Germany in her room…
The story is hilarious. However, it is much more than that. It explores the effect on the lives of the people in both former East Germany and former West Germany. While people believed that the merger would be a good thing for the Germans, it turns out that many East Germans saw their life long savings turning into vacuum, jobs moving out of now German East, East Germans and West Germans not getting along… West Germans also needed to carry the burden of the merger.
The role of Alex's Russian girlfriend Lara (Chulpan Khamatova) probably reflects the Russians' acceptance of the fall of communism, while Christiane reflects the feeling of some East German who would rather not have the merger. At least Russia is not being absorbed by another country. Now the East Germans have nothing to be happy about. The fact that the Germans won the FIFA World Cup, as shown in the film, did bring some joy to both the East Germans and West Germans. But they didn't have much to celebrate apart from that. (I remember that there were only 3 out of 22 players in the teams who were from former East Germany. I wonder how happy could the East Germans could be.)
Enough discussions about politics! It is a comedy, after all, and you do not need to know much about the history of Germany to appreciate the plot.
