Frida Kahlo (Selma Hayek) suffered from a serious traffic accident and she was unable to get up by her own for a very long time. While sleeping bed and waited for healing, she developed her interest in painting. She had a one-of-a-kind style and was praised. She took her paintings to Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) and asked for his opinion as to whether she should pursue a career as an artist. Later, they fell in love, and they got married. After developing his fame, Diego went to US to paint the walls of different famous buildings. However, he had such a character that he painted the face of a communist leader on a wall of Rockefeller Tower (of course, he was fired). Diego loved Frida, but he was unable to be faithful to her, and they had a brutal divorce. But, they were still very much in love…

The film is basically a bio of the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, a talented, bisexual girl who had her life completely changed after she had a traffic accident. The film focuses a lot of Frida's pain and her talent and does not talk too much about her sexuality. In the film, she had only one or two close encounter with other women, but hardly intimate. On the other had, Diego Rivera (her husband)'s promiscuity was so much a highlight in the story to make the audience sympathetic to Frida's life. Quite unfair, isn't it.

If you want to watch the film because you want to watch the performance of Ashley Judd and Antonio Banderas, you will be very disappointed because they appear in only one scene (or did I miss anything?). However, why don't we put more focus on Selma Hayek. Her performance in the film is excellent. Anything specific? Nope, but she was only nothing but good. Hayek is actually a member of the production team. And, as far as I have heard, she had put tremendous effort in making this film a good one. No wonder that she put so much effort in playing her role in the film.
