Drunken Monkey is arguably the long awaited new film of Shaw Brothers. I am glad that this old film production company is back in the game again. At the same time, I am a bit disappointed it is not making the type of film that I prefer.

The story is about a kung fu master, who was the head of an old-day courier service, being betrayed and had to hide himself from the rest of the jiang hu people. Two youngsters heard about him and tried to find him in order to learn his style of kung fu, the drunken monkey style. At the end, the villains reaped what they sowed. It sounds like stories made into film more than 15 years ago. The film does give you a feeling of watching a film of the 80s (not necessarily technically). By that itself, it is not necessary a bad thing. For the older generation, that might be quite appealing. For other markets, it is a selling point, too. For myself, I was not quite fond of those days.

The story has a number of flaws, by the way. The timeliness of certain scenes is questionable. Some story lines have no endings. Some lines violate cause-effect relationships. Some scenes are obviously put there to make the film appealing but have no values to the development of the story. These could have been fixed easily. The writer wanted to put a number of comedy pieces into the film. However, he failed big time. The mood of the story is not suitable for putting in those pieces. Without those, the plot should have run much more smoothly.

Certainly, the story is the not best one, but the actors did play well in their roles. Master Lau, the director and actor in the film and a real kung fu master, did do his best with his martial art skills. Jason Wu is also an honorable mention.

Shaw Brothers has been out of the game for too long, I think, and they have a lot to catch up. I hope this film marks the coming of many masterpieces from the company.
