The film is presented under a linear narrative of Lara's (Angelina Jolie) course in re-seizing the orb for opening Pandora's Box from the bad guys. Parallel to the theme of the series, the film carries the adventurous spirit by shooting at a multiplicity of locales across the globe.
With a Chinese motif, both in narrative and visual, the director attaches emphasis on the setting and costume, with deliberately constructed mis-en-scenes capturing Chinese characters, Chinese martial arts weapons, Chinese scenic beauty, Hong Kong's scenes as well as Lara's traditional Chinese female jackets. Yet viewers who are familiar with the Chinese culture will find some mis-en-scenes and vocals out of reality because of, among other things, the use of complex Chinese characters in a setting of Shanghai, the Chinese fisherman in a Vietnamese hat and the speaking of Mandarin by another fisherman's family in Hong Kong.
Further to the Chinese motif, an interesting visual contrast along the Sino-British theme is visualized in the mis-en-scene in the props and staging in the sequence of martial arts between Chen Lo (Simon Yam) with big Chinese swords and Lara with a British Guard's knife-equipped rifle. Despite of the simplicity of the storyline, the film delivers 117 mins of rich visual filmic elements.
