In real life, Chuck Barris had designed a number of very famous game shows, like the Gong Show, the Dating Game (where a Hong Kong version was once aired), and the Newly Wed Game. He wrote a book of the same name which is sort of an autobiography, but added much life to it by saying he was a CIA agent while working as a TV game show producer. This film is based on the story of book.

Chuck Barris (Sam Rockwell), TV producer, started his game show producing career with The Dating Game. He was in love with Penny (Drew Barrymore) but he never intended to marry her. While The Dating Game became a big thing on TV, Jim Byrd (George Clooney), a CIA director, recruited Chuck as an agent. To facilitate his CIA missions, he changed the format of the game show so that the couples would be sent to exotic places outside the country and he, as a guardian of the contestants, could accomplish his assignments. He knew Patricia (Julia Roberts) who was the contact in Germany. After a number of killings, he wanted to leave CIA, but Byrd found that there was a mole in his operation, and Chuck had to find out who the mole was, or else he could be killed…

The story is almost one of a kind, mixing real life events with imaginary events which sound as if the whole thing were true. Or perhaps you can think the events as something that Chuck Barris thought he has done as a result of hallucination. In any case, the setting is attractive.

Sam Rockwell is the real main character but was almost not mentioned in the promotion of the film. Perhaps he is not famous enough in Hong Kong even though he was in famous films like Charlie's Angels, Galaxy Quest, and the Green Mile. So, the focus of promotion in Hong Kong focuses much more on Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, and the first-time director in addition to actor George Clooney. In any case, Rockwell played his role good enough. Clooney's directing probably passes, but obvious it was quite a challenge for him as he said in an interview. He said it even sounded inappropriate when he wanted to have some more shots on himself.

All in all, Confession of a Dangerous Mind is quite an entertaining film. For people who know the game shows of Chuck Barris, the film is even more entertaining for them.
