Cidade de Deu (City of God) is a residential area for the poor in Rio
de Janeiro. Because of the density of the population there, the place soon became
a cradle for all sorts of crime. The story talks about the lives of some
very young main characters living in the area from 1960s to 1980s, featuring Rocket,
who wanted to be a journalist, and Li'l Dice, who wanted to be a drug dealer.
However, there were at least 100 kids playing different roles in the film, and
some more characters made up fair shares in the story. That means the film is
more talking about the city itself than any single person living there. The
film is pretty violent. Those who fall asleep for any reason would be awaken by
the sound of gunshots from time to time. The film earned quite a number
of nominations and awards. Based on the production of the film, I believe it is
worth every single nomination or award that it got. I recommend this film. |
