The narrative is unrestricted and typical of a US cops' movie, beginning with a montage of the smuggling of the drugs into the States and developing along the transit path of the drugs to its ultimate buyer. To embellish this inherent linearity in the plot, the director manipulates around the personality of the pair and a significant portion of the narrative lends itself to the divergence of their characters: Mike (Will Smith) is dominant, task-oriented and he takes the lead throughout the film whereas Marcus (Martin Lawrence) bears passiveness in terms of initiative and tactfulness.
The director exhibits his core competence in bringing visual fascinations. As the plot in its earlier sequences entails a multiplicity of parties and their locales, the director uses a few innovative shooting in some establishment shots. The most spectacular ones are (1) the turning of an aerial extreme long shot of day time Miami into a long shot of a protagonist on the roof of a building under a tilt in a single shot; and (2) the turning of an aerial travelling shot of a helicopter at night time Miami into a zoom-in follow-shot through the air duct to some figures in a nightclub.
Another contraption in cinematography is the 360 degree shot of continuity in the sequence of containing the Haitian gang. Using the room clutter as a transition device, the framing is a modified version of the similar shot in The Matrix, being more than enough in enhancing reality and escalating the tension of the viewer. Yet the legacy of The Matrix continues in another two scenes of travelling bullets in slow motion. Even in some shot-reverse shots of dialogues, camera tracking prevails. The camera seldom becomes static throughout the 147 minute screen time.
With the story being far beyond reality and political realm, the film presents a large mise-en-scene with three motifs of (1) dialogues with foul words, (2) car chasing, and (3) dead bodies (very often cut or blown into pieces) in an attempt to satisfy those who pursues visual excitement.
