The story of Adaptation is one of the wildest scripts that I have ever seen. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman wrote himself into the script, where the Charlie Kaufman (Nicholas Cage) in the story was trying to adapt a book "The Orchid Thief" of Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep) who is also a real life person. The book (in the story) was about John Laroche (Chris Cooper), which I do not know if it is a real person, who stole Ghost Orchid from the protected forests in Florida for the Native Americans. Charlie (the character) had difficulty in adapting the book because there were no twists in the book. He turned to his twin brother Donald (which I hope is only fictional), who was also a screenwriter, for help. He wanted to interview Susan (the character), but did not have the guts. So Donald did it for him, and he decided that she was lying in her book. So, they followed her to find out the truth…
The more I think about the script the more confused I become because of the possibility that a fair share of the story being non-fiction. The story as a whole is a fiction, but the fact that there are so many real-world person related characters makes the story very interesting. It is very interesting just to think about the story line: Charlie (the real person) writing a fictional Charlie in the story writing a Charlie for a film script. Do you know what I mean? I think Charlie Kaufman could have been influenced by Chuck Barris to write this script when he wrote the screenplay of Confession of a Dangerous Mind, where Chuck Barris inserted his fictional life as a CIA agent in his "autobiography".
The acting of the actors is worth so much to mention. Nicholas Cage (Charlie Kaufman and Donald Kaufman could be the first person to get nominated as best actor in the leading role (for Charlie) and best actor in a supporting role (for Donald). Without him, the film cannot be as successful. Meryl Streep's acting is unquestionably good for playing Susan Orlean.
