Troublesome Romance may look like any regular Hong Kong romantic comedy, but it is more than that.
The unusual but not inappropriate combination ofAlex To, Grace Ip and Jojo Man is the focus of the film. 3 seemingly unrelated people explored together the meaning of struggling through adversity. Alex To plays the unfortunate widower surgeon who saw his wife died at his surgical table. At the verge to suicide he met Grace Ip, the restless teenager who also wanted to kill herself after having an unsuccessful love affair. When they all thought their lives were tragic enough, in came Jojo Man, the social worker of Grace's case, who suffered from long term mental torture by a former boyfriend, who pretended to be happy while helping others.
The storyline is pleasing to the audience. There are no illogical twists or unexplained scenes, very lifelike and real. However, by achieving this, the movie becomes less sparkling and less interesting. The motives and the actions are more or less predictable. No surprises. It is a sincere effort to tell a realistic story.
The casting is appropriate. Occasionally Grace did overact for her rough character. As she had mentioned, it was a difficult task for her to be rough because it really wasn't her.
One thing to note is the production side. The sound effects and voice-overs are a bit poor. Often within the same scene and the same shot, the volumes of voice-over are different for different characters.
In sum, it is not a crappy movie, just no big surprises, be it pleasant or unpleasant.
