Film of the 26th Hong Kong International Film Festival
Filmed with a DV camera, the one-man band production team Andrew Yu brings us a story written by Mianmian about 4 young Shanghaiese who were troubled with drugs, STD, their respective relationships, and their sexuality. The first thing that I feel about this film is that it is a very low-budget film. In fact, Andrew Yu did every thing except playing any characters in the film. Without any sophisticated equipment used in the filming, you would get the feeling that the whole film is like a home video. The editing, or lack of, is unpleasing. The cast also lacks the charm to make the audience be sympathetic to the thoughts and the "panicking" of the characters. That part where characters Bei and Jie (both male) caressed and bathed together and then lay in bed (but no sex, thank god) to talk about their relationship was disgusting and boring and unnecessarily long. Again, I do support low-budget films. But, they have to do better than this one. |
