Years ago, when Jeanne was a new born, she was mistaken as his son by the great pianist Andre Polonski. Jeanne, who was also a talented pianist, found out the story and visited Andre, and later Andre decided to polish her piano skills. While serving Jeanne some chocolate drink, Mika (Isabelle Huppert), Andre's present wife, poured the drink onto the floor. Jeanne saw that Mika deliberately did that. Trying to know Mika's motive, Jeanne sent a piece of chocolate tainted clothing to his boyfriend who worked in her mother's lab. She found that there were sleeping pill ingredients. She was later invited to stay in Polonski's for 2 days for more piano practice. On the surface, Mika welcomed Jeanne. Inside, it was a different story.

If you have watched "The Piano Teacher" (La Pianiste), you will find that this film has a lot of similarities with "The Piano Teacher": They are both French, both involve pianos and piano teachers, and their main female characters were both played by Isabelle Hupper, the talented but not likable actress (at least in these two films). The film is an award winner, and Huppert's acting is likely to be the most important reason. Similar to her role in "The Piano Teacher", her character was sick and indifferent. You would hate her roles in these two films not long after you start to watch them, because she played the two roles so well.

The film portrays jealousy to the extreme. How much would a person be willing to take when his/her status is being challenged? Mika's case, not typical, is not impossible, even though for a person so fulfilled by materials. Unluckily, Andre's reaction to Mika's evil act is not quite convincing as his son's life was in jeopardy. Is his reaction somehow blinded by his love towards Mika? Possible but unlikely.
