Tse was recently unemployed. She was married to Ku for a long time and they had a daughter named Xiaowen. Tse wanted to get some unemployment assistance, but the officials needed her marriage certificate before she could get it. And, she could not find the certificate anywhere. They tried to have one reissued, but the office that issued their certificate had long been closed. What started out as a claim for assistance became her obsession. Her being desperate was affecting the harmony of the family. At the same time, Ku's assistance at work seemed to be interested in him. That created much tension between Tse and Ku. Tse and Ku were on the verge of a divorce.

The story is told often from the perspective of Xiaowen, the lovely daughter character in the film. However, the story is not only through the girl's perspective, it also portraits a lot of the motive of Tse in the search of the marriage certificate, a woman's sense of insecurity in a world where a marriage certificate matter more than love - the thing which marriage supposed to be based on. The film not only talks about the ridicule in consequences of search for the proof of love, but also how a child is affected in such a situation.

In the film, the search originated from the proof of the love and relationship between Tse and Ku, and that in turn almost ruined the marriage. People got to be reminded why they do something in the first place.
