Two North Korean soldiers were shot in the North Korean side of Panmunjeom (or Joint Security Area). Lee Soo-Hyuk (Lee Byung-Heon) was suspected for the "murder" in the North Korean side of the border. However, his statement was very different from that of the survivor of the incident, Oh Kyung-Pil (Song Hang-Ho). To investigate the situation, the United Nation sent Sophie E. Jean (Lee Young-Ae), a Swiss-born Korean to Panmunjeom. Towards the end of the investigation, she was found to be connected to North Korea and thus her objectivity was questioned. She was discharged, but that was why the soldiers were willing to tell her the truth in the end.
The film topped the box office in Korea in 2000. That is not a fluke. With the more open mind of the Korean governments, the Korean people wanted this kind of films. But putting aside the wish of the Korean people, the film itself is truly well made film. On the production side, everything is almost up to Hollywood standard. On the story side, the irony and tragedy of the Korean people in a split country is fully revealed. The film talks about the dilemma of the Korean people on the two sides of the border. On one hand, they are the same people. On the other hand, they are enemies. The characters in the film had to choose between being loyal to their own countries (or sides of the country) and friendship. Perhaps from the beginning, the friendship was meant to be a tragedy. But why the situation was that in the first place? What is it serving? That is the irony that the film was trying to explore.
Of course, it is a Korean film for the Korean people, but anyone who is interested in a good drama would find this film a very good one. As a matter of fact, I believe this film is one of the best films I saw this year.
