Gus (David Duchovny), renowned New York director, was going to host a birthday party in Los Angeles. He invited a number of people who seem to have no relationship to one another. Lee (Catherine Keener) was falling for actor Calvin (Blair Underwood), and was going to divorce her writer/scriptwriter husband Carl (David Hyde Pierce). Lee's sister Linda (Mary McCormack), who was afraid of having companionless life, was going to meet a netfriend "Arty" (Enrico Colantoni) in Tuscon. All of them ended up in some unplanned events.
Although director Steven Soderbergh has been made famous blockbusters including "Traffic", this film is made such that it looks and feels like an independent film. Most parts of the film ware made as if it was filmed with 16mm film and a small part with 35mm film. However, later I found out that the film was made with digital video. (I am still confused.) Cinematography and transition between shots was poor, although could have been intentional to make the film more "independent".
The message of the film seems to be too subtle, and it is not quite revealed until the end of the film. The film suggests how real life is similar to drama, and that we should not take what we have for granted. The ending surely surprised me but it did not really change my interpretation of the story.
By the way, Brad Pitt was in the movie as himself.
