Franta Slama (Ondrei Vetchy), a prisoner in a labor camp for being an "enemy of the people", was sent to the hospital in the camp. When asked what brought him into the camp, he told his WWII story, starting from the time when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. He was a pilot the Germans took over his base. He and Karel Vojtisek (Krystof Hadek), another pilot who has a father-and-son-like relationship, went to UK and joined the Royal Air Force, hoping to help the allies to defeat Germany so as to free their own country. In an operation, Karel's plane was hit. While he was believed to have expired in the combat, he survived and stayed in Susan's (Tara Fitzgerald) house. Susan's husband was believed to be dead after found missing in the Royal Navy's operation. Karel fell for her, and he took Franta to meet Susan. She later sent a letter to Karel that their relationship was a mistake, and at the same time she drove to the air base to tell Franta that she was falling for Franta. Karel later found out and was furious. In another combat, Franta accused Karel for trying to kill him as revenge...

This film is a Czech film by Jan Sverak. It is unusual for a non-English film to have air combat scenes as good as this one, where money is always the prime issue. Considering the fact that the market size is much smaller for non-English films than English ones, the film is almost a miracle. As a matter of fact, the war scenes are up to Hollywood standard, if not above.

The film has 3 main themes. One is the story love life of Franta, who lost his love both at home and in the faraway land. The second is about the war between the allies and the Third Reich. The third is the ridicule of the Czechoslovak air force people, who fought for the country by joining the RAF was considered contaminated (with the influence of the Soviet Union) by Western culture and were put into labor camps. Actually, the first and the third are quite related. Franta lost everything, including all his loved ones, back in Czechoslovakia after fighting for the nation and for its people, and the payback was jail time. How ridiculous!
