Film of the 26th Hong Kong International Film Festival
The film is the silver screen version of the hit Japanese TV variety show "Vermilion Pleasure Night". The TV program, 25 minutes each, features comic segments utilizing different ways to express the fun of different aspects of "life". The film is basically 4 shows, featuring family, food, anger and fear, and love. The first impression that I have about this film is that it looks a lot like "Saturday Night Live" (SNL), a fun variety show in the US which has been shown for a number of years. The similarity between the two is that they both please the local people, but foreigners would have difficulty in enjoying them. In the case of "the Color of Life", I know that the Japanese would love the stuffs in the films, but I, not being a Japanese, feel that most segments are purely ridiculous, not funny (I have the same feeling for SNL, even though I have been in the US for a number of years). Of course, if you love the Japanese culture, perhaps you would fall in love with the film immediately. The segments that I hate most are those of the Fuccon Family, featuring a 3-person mannequin family. Apart from other things, the sound of the laughs is obnoxious. On the other hand, I appreciate the segment featuring a song about the separation of egg white and egg yolk. It sounds quite "Hong Kong" and should suit the taste of local people here. |
