The Circle is an Iranian film about the story of seven Iranian women. Many of them are ex-cons, one is a prostitute, and one is the mother of a newborn. Regardless of what they did, most of them ended up in a prison for different reasons at the end of film. Three of them were caught for escaping from the prison, one for prostitution, and one probably framed to have committed a crime because give birth to a girl while her in-laws believed she was going to give birth to a boy.

The film is about the oppression towards women in Iran. Regardless where they come from, they have limited freedom, such as: no woman may travel on a bus without company. To the eyes of the people with much more freedom, that is completely ridiculous. However, especially in the Muslim world, women may do limited number of things. Through the story of the seven Iranian women, director Jafar Panahi took the risk to reveal the freedomlessness of the Muslim women. In this respect, Panahi is successful. However, every ah-ha he presents in the film is simple, and there is not much story in the 90 minutes of the film. That being said, the pace of the film is slow, and the entertainment value of the film is very limited.

The actresses in the film are far from beautiful. Although beauty is far from the number one thing in a film, the beauty (or lack of it) of the artistes in this film fail to grasp the attention of the audience, especially in such a slow-paced film. The film might suit the taste of those who would like to watch different things and those who want to understand the cultures of different parts of the world. For those who are looking for excitement, they would probably tear down the theater.
