Film of the 26th Hong Kong International Film Festival

Showtime:    2002/4/1 12:30pm @ Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre,
2002/4/6 3pm @ City Hall
Origin:   Korea
Language:   Korean, with English subtitles only

A Korean woman kept sending love letters to her US army sweetheart who already moved back to US, and all the letters were returned. Their son always hit her. Why? She was not the only Korean woman who had a relationship with a US soldier, and it was not the only such relationship with an unusual boyfriend-girlfriend problem. A blind girl needed an eye surgery and became a US soldier's girlfriend so that he would pay for the operation, and later she had to blind herself again. Why?

The film portrays a lot of fistfights among the Korean guys. At that time, their country had been oppressed by different countries, and their country was and is still torn into two pieces. The film reveals the rage of the Koreans as a result of the situation that they were experiencing. The fact that they used their fists to solve their problems looks very uncivilized in the modern world, but that was the truth back then, 50 years ago, in Korea.

The film is made by Kim Ki-duk, the director who also made "the Isle". As pointed out in our review on "the Isle", the film was odd to local people's standard. This film is much milder. We do not see absurd things like peeling off the flesh of a fish and then freeing the fish into the water, and we do not see unnecessary violence here and there (although violence is still a significant part of the film) like fish hooks in the mouths. The film will likely be better received here than "the Isle", but it still will not be as well received as other Korean films like JSA and Ditto which suit local taste better.
