善 於 拍 攝 情 慾 電 影 的 導 演 菲 臘 哥 夫 曼 ， 這 次 將 一 代 色 情 文 豪 沙 特 侯 爵 的 故 事 搬 上 銀 幕 。 雖 然 題 材 三 級 ， 但 全 片 關 於 色 情 文 學 都 大 部 份 只 用 對 白 表 達 ， 當 然 ， 赤 身 露 體 的 場 面 亦 有 ， 但 都 只 是 適 可 宜 止 。 導 演 特 別 強 調 沙 特 在 寫 作 色 情 文 學 的 才 華 ， 以 蓋 嘆 沙 特 錯 生 於 對 性 仍 十 分 保 守 的 十 八 世 紀 ， 令 其 餘 生 只 可 在 精 神 病 院 內 渡 過 。

演 員 方 面 ， 此 片 雲 集 多 位 份 量 十 足 的 演 員 演 出 。 憑 " 閃 亮 的 風 采 " 獲 得 金 像 影 帝 的 謝 菲 路 殊 ， 他 演 活 了 沙 特 侯 爵 那 種 放 蕩 不 羈 ， 狂 妄 自 大 的 性 格 。 因 劇 情 所 需 ， 他 還 在 片 中 末 段 作 全 裸 演 出 。 另 一 個 金 像 影 帝 米 高 堅 則 飾 演 衛 道 之 士 洛 高 醫 生 ， 其 攝 人 眼 神 與 不 溫 不 燥 的 談 吐 方 式 ， 亦 充 份 演 譯 了 洛 高 醫 生 那 緊 握 大 權 ， 高 高 在 上 的 威 嚴 。 戲 中 幾 幕 與 謝 菲 路 殊 的 對 手 戲 ， 都 是 兩 大 影 帝 互 鬥 演 技 的 表 演 ， 觀 眾 實 在 是 不 容 錯 過 。 飾 演 神 父 艾 比 的 祖 昆 馮 力 士 ， 在 兩 大 影 帝 交 鋒 下 ， 雖 仍 保 持 水 準 但 已 明 顯 比 不 上 。 在 表 達 他 以 神 父 之 身 份 而 傾 慕 由 琦 溫 斯 莉 所 飾 演 的 侍 女 美 黛 蓮 ， 筆 者 認 為 他 在 處 理 艾 比 內 心 之 矛 盾 感 時 ， 則 稍 欠 功 力 ， 其 演 譯 過 於 含 蓄 。 至 於 琦 溫 斯 莉 則 一 如 以 往 般 發 揮 其 成 熟 的 演 技 。 在 此 片 中 她 再 一 次 展 露 其 身 材 ， 此 片 獲 得 本 屆 奧 斯 卡 3 項 大 獎 提 名 ， 算 是 露 得 值 得 了 。

此 片 除 了 描 述 SM 鼻 祖 ， 一 代 色 情 文 學 作 家 沙 特 侯 爵 充 滿 傳 奇 色 彩 的 一 生 外 ， 亦 探 討 當 時 法 國 對 言 論 自 由 的 抑 制 與 人 民 抗 衡 之 方 法 。 此 外 ， 亦 隱 隱 帶 出 色 情 文 學 對 社 會 的 影 響 ： 沙 特 的 作 品 之 所 以 暢 銷 ， 是 因 為 人 民 在 認 同 ？ 抑 或 是 用 之 以 對 抗 當 時 衛 道 之 士 對 " 性 文 學 " 視 之 為 洪 水 猛 獸 ， 荼 毒 社 會 的 毒 藥 ？ 性 文 學 是 輔 助 工 具 去 讓 人 認 識 性 ？ 抑 或 是 敗 壞 社 會 風 氣 的 催 化 劑 ？

The film is based on the true story of Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush), the originator of the term "sadism" (sexual pleasure derived from pain), who was sent to an asylum at Charenton (instead of jail) for publishing his erotic novels. He was once sentenced to death for his work but he escaped. In fact, he spent 27 years in prison for his writing. The end of the story was fictionalized, as Marquis died of respiratory failure instead of what was filmed.

In the asylum, Abbe Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix) allowed Marquis to write erotic novels. The deal was that Marquis was not allowed to let others read the work. Abbe believed that, by letting Marquis write to release his desire to write, Marquis would be in better shape. However, Madeleine Leclerc (Kate Winslet) helped Marquis take the work to the publisher. The government found out his work was published and sent Antoine Royer-Collard (Michael Caine) to head the asylum. It became the battle between Marquis and Royer-Collard. Royer-Collard, with his authority and persistence, finally got Marquis killed, but Marquis unknowingly "won" because Royer-Collard's bride ran away.

The film is more than about the last decade of the life of Marquis de Sade, it is also about freedom of speech, the effects erotica and pornography, and to some degree how to deal with kids about erotic materials. In the film, when Marquis was not allowed to write his novels, he had no way to release his thoughts. For modern people, it would be like being disallowed to express their opinions about sex, religion, politics... We don't want this freedom to be taken away, so what should be our position towards Marquis's writing? Should erotica and pornography be banned (put aside freedom of speech for a minute)? Isn't it what people want? As portrayed in the film and in real life, it is something wanted. Also, look at Royer-Collard's case. His bride was an orphan who was brought up in a church and had never read a "dirty" book in her life until she was about to marry him. She explored sex as written in Marquis's work with the interior designer. Should she have known about these novels earlier and talked about it with the nuns, she might not have done what she had done. We don't want to see this case happening to our children, so what should be the message we send to our kids regarding sex and pornography? I believe there are a lot to think about.

I find the end of the film hard to understand. Royer-Collard finally published Marquis's work after Marquis's death. Was it because of money? Was he not afraid of Napoleon who could put him to death? The film did not explain why he did that, and I don't think his experience in the asylum would change him like that. Abbe's becoming crazy was also too exaggerating. Not convincing.
