"Life is a Miracle", the newest directing offer of Adrian Lee, is based on a true story of a cancer patient Tracy (Nadia Chan). The film picked up at when Tracy and her husband Man Ho discovered Tracy's previous cancer treatment failed to work. The cancer cells backfired and she had 2 months to live. How Tracy overcame her fear as a dying patient was the main focus with the emphasis on how she became an influence to those around her including her husband (Mark Kwok), her fellow patient Cat, the janitor (Mackey), and the mountainous figure Dr Yang (Peter K. Yang), to overcome their own problems.

Man Ho had to struggle between work and taking care of Tracy. Cat was with her cynical attitude towards the world and self pity of being without hope. The janitor tried to reconcile with his daughter who hated him for being an ex-prisoner. And Dr Yang was unwilling to let go of his wife since her death. The film wants to bring out the issue of love and courage. No matter how difficult the problem is, you just have to remember no one is hopeless.

This was not meant to be an attempt for an Oscar nor a box office hit guarantee. Director Adrian Lee, after his years in the film industry, was shaken by the issue of pirated VCDs. He was not looking at it from a moral point of view. He felt that he had put in so much effort in his previous production and only to find them became a HK$5 item in the VCD stores. He could not see the values he once saw in his films anymore. From then on, he wanted to make films that were meaningful which would stay in the audience's mind long after they finished seeing the film.

In this Adrian has done a good job. The message that love and support can conquer everything is loud and clear. The set is plain to emphasis on the normalcy of everyday lives. There are no fancy dialogues, nor exquisite costumes. There is no complicated plot, nor surprises. There was no purposeful "acting" needed. All artists performed so superbly that the audience is tricked into believing that the are real.

Some may feel uneasy with bible bashing in the film, but it is not apparent and not forceful. Rather it seemed to be there at the right moment. Religion may not work for everyone, but at least it did help a lot of people.

By the way, one of the really great things was that they had an excellent sound track.
